Why these are the best gluten-free Christmas cookies

  • Made without processed sugars and processed all-purpose white flour. White sugar and white all-purpose flour is processed and spikes sugar levels. These gluten-free Christmas cookies are made with gluten-free flours and monk fruit for a lower sugar treat!
  • Cookies can be altered for any holiday by the color of the sprinkles. Make the cookie dough and then roll them in red and green sprinkles for a Christmas party. Or use the same recipe using pink sprinkles or rainbow sprinkles for a birthday party or Valentine's Day.

Tips for Christmas cookie success

  • Measure the gluten-free flour properly using a dry measuring cup and spoon. Use a spoon to scoop out the flour into a measuring cup then using the flat part of a knife level it off. This way you get the proper amount of flour and not too much as flour settles during shipping.
  • Flatten the cookies with the bottom of a glass before baking. These gluten-free Christmas cookies do not flatten on their own in while baked the oven. So after they are rolled in the sprinkles then gently flatten to desired thickness, or about ½-inch.
  • Chill the dough. Chilling the dough before baking allows the ingredients to settle and makes the cookies more flavorful. It also makes the cookies not gritty and softens them.

Storing gluten-free cookies

How to store cookies at room temperature: You can store the cookies in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days. After about 2 days gluten-free cookies tend to dry out. To moisten them, add a damp paper towel over a cookie and heat it in the microwave for about 5-7 seconds to warm it slightly.

How to freeze cookies and cookie dough: Freeze the cookies in a sealed zip-tight bag in the freezer for up to 2 months. You can also freeze the dough by wrapping it in plastic then placing in a freezer storage bag with all the air removed. Thaw the dough then scoop into 1-inch rounds and bake as instructed. If the dough seems a bit dry, add about 1 tablespoon (at a time) of water and use an electric mix to mix it until it is softer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my gluten-free cookies dry and crumbly?

When gluten-free cookies come out of the oven dry and crumbly this is due to too much flour and not enough liquid or sugars. Make sure to measure the flour by scooping it with a spoon into a dry measuring cup and leveling it off with a knife.

How do you keep gluten-free cookies from being gritty?

Gritty gluten-free cookies can be from the grains and gluten-free flour blends. Make sure to let the cookie dough rest covered for 30 minutes before baking. This helps to moisten and soften the cookie dough, also lending a more flavorful gluten-free cookie.

How do you make gluten-free cookies stay together?

To make gluten-free cookies stick together xanthan gum is added to gluten-free flour blends. This is a main ingredient to help bind the dough in gluten-free cookies. If your gluten-free blend does no include xanthan gum then add about ½ teaspoon to 1 teaspoon to the cookie recipe.
