How to make peanut butter kiss cookies

  • First preheat your oven to 350. Some recipes request that you preheat oven to 375 but I find that they are less likely to dry out when they are baked at the lower temperature.
  • Then cream together the ½ cup sugar, brown sugar, butter and peanut butter until smooth.
  • Next add egg and vanilla and beat together into the butter mixture. Then whisk together flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl.
  • After those ingredients are thoroughly combined, slowly add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, beating until incorporated.

  • Next shape the dough into 24 1″ balls and place them on baking sheets several inches apart. After you have rolled the dough, then gently make an indentation in the center of each cookie just like in the photo below. You could sprinkle some sugar before baking.
  • Finally, bake them in the preheated oven for 12-14 minutes. After this cooking time, remove from the oven and place a Hershey Kiss in the center of each cookie.

  • Then move the cookies to a cooling rack at room temperature and allow for them to cool completely which usually takes around 30 minutes.

How to store Kiss cookies

After they have cooled, I move the cookies to an air tight container so we can can enjoy them later. To be honest, they usually don’t last long there as my family always devours these cookies quickly!

They will keep up to 2 weeks if stored properly.

Can you freezer leftover cookies?

When I bake over the holidays, I usually intentionally make extras so I can freeze them and my family can enjoy cookies all throughout the year!

I get a lot of questions about what can be frozen and what cannot because I’m an avid freezer cooker and leftover cookies can definitely be frozen!

The only difference for this cookies is that I would let them defrost at room temperature instead of baking them so that the milk chocolate kisses do not melt. You can freeze the cookies up to 3 to 6 months.

Just make sure if you are freezing that you use an air tight container. I also like to separate the layers with parchment paper.

Variation Ideas:

What is great about this cookie recipe is you can change out the chocolate candy for something else.

  • Try a caramel candy like a Rolo
  • A Peppermint Kiss would be yummy for the Christmas Holidays
  • You can even put a bite size snickers on top.
  • We have even sprinkled a little powdered sugar on top.
  • A Reese’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup would taste amazing on top.

The options are endless and that is why they are my favorite cookies to make.

Helpful supplies:

In my family, I am usually not the baker. I prefer to use my crock pot to make a recipe. All you have to do is toss in the ingredients and voila, dinner is done! This is definitely my favorite way to cook.

However, I do enjoy creating delicious desserts with my kids and they love to bake! So here I am learning to bake more and more and learning to love it as well!

  • My mom bought me a stand alone Kitchen-aid Mixer a few years back for Christmas and I do love it so much! It makes creating delicious cookies and cakes easier to do.
  • Usually, I use my stand up mixer when I create cookies but you definitely don’t have to have one for this recipe. I have this Kitchen-aid hand held mixer as well and it work great.

Peanut butter is a food paste or spread made from ground, dry-roasted peanuts. It commonly contains additional ingredients that modify the taste or texture, such as salt, sweeteners, or emulsifiers.
Wikipedia

Why are my 3 ingredient peanut butter cookies falling apart? ›

There are a few reasons why your cookies are falling apart. The wrong ratio of ingredients, such as too little sugar or peanut butter will make them fall apart. The wrong type of peanut butter may cause them to fall apart. Or using old eggs may create crumbly cookies.

What is the secret to soft cookies? ›

Baking cookies quickly in a hot oven – at 375 degrees F as opposed to a lower temperature – will make for soft results. They'll bake fast instead of sitting and drying out in the oven's hot air. Ever so slightly underbaking your cookies will give you softer results than cooking them the full amount the recipe says.

Why are my peanut butter cookies always hard? ›

Why did my peanut butter cookies turn out hard? This is most likely to happen from over-baking your cookies. Make sure to take them out of the oven when they're still a bit soft in the middles, that way they can finish cooking on their cookie sheets outside the oven.

Why are my homemade peanut butter cookies falling apart? ›

One reason could be that you overcooked them. Another reason could be that you didn't add enough moisture to the dough. Finally, your peanut butter cookies might be dry and crumbly if you used a natural peanut butter that doesn't have any added oil.

What happens if you don't flatten peanut butter cookies? ›

If you don't flatten the cookies first, then the fork does double duty – it performs both functions. One very subtle result of creating the pattern is that the little tips of dough bake up crisper than the rest of the cookie, giving you both a bit of additional texture and deeper taste where the dough is more baked.

Why do my peanut butter cookies taste weird? ›

One reason could be that you overcooked them. Another reason could be that you didn't add enough moisture to the dough. Finally, your peanut butter cookies might be dry and crumbly if you used a natural peanut butter that doesn't have any added oil.

Why do you smash peanut butter cookies? ›

The 1932 or 1933 recipes do not explain why this advice is given, though: peanut butter cookie dough is dense, and without being pressed, it will not cook evenly. Using a fork to press the dough is a convenience; bakers can also use a cookie shovel.

Should I use baking soda or baking powder in cookies? ›

Baking soda is typically used for chewy cookies, while baking powder is generally used for light and airy cookies. Since baking powder is comprised of a number of ingredients (baking soda, cream of tartar, cornstarch, etc.), using it instead of pure baking soda will affect the taste of your cookies.

What makes cookies chewy and not hard? ›

If you enjoy your cookies soft and chewy, chances are likely the recipe contains a common ingredient that serves a very specific purpose. No, it's not granulated sugar, nor the butter. It's not the egg, all-purpose flour, or even the vanilla extract. The simple, yet oh-so-necessary component is cornstarch.

Is it OK to use melted butter instead of softened? ›

Softened butter and melted butter are not the same. Using melted butter will change the texture of whatever you're baking. If you only want the butter to soften for spreading, microwave it on the Defrost setting (30%) in 5-second increments until it's softened as desired.

What happens if you add too much peanut butter to peanut butter cookies? ›

This may not sound like a lot, but it is enough that it can affect the quality of your cookies – adding too much peanut butter can make them dry, hard, and crumbly.

Should you refrigerate peanut butter cookie dough before baking? ›

Chill your cookie dough! The dough is extremely soft due to the creamy peanut butter, eggs, and butter and if it's not cold going into the oven, the cookies will spread all over your baking sheet. I chilled this cookie dough for 24 hours and my cookies were soft, thick perfection.

Is it better to use butter or shortening in peanut butter cookies? ›

Your other source of fat should be butter, not shortening. Butter will make your cookies taste buttery; shortening will make them taste suspiciously vacant, like Katy Perry's voice post-autotune. Yes, shortening yields chewier cookies than butter does, because butter contains water and shortening doesn't.

What are the 4 main ingredient in baking cookies? ›

While there may be countless variations, each cookie at the core has four ingredients – butter, sugar, flour & eggs. The proportions of ingredients and the methods of mixing are what define our cookies. Dough spreads – Inside the hot oven, the butter starts to melt and the dough gradually starts to spread out.

What is the best peanut butter for baking cookies? ›

Peanut butter: Creamy peanut butter is ideal for this recipe because crunchy peanut butter creates an overly crumbly cookie. You can use processed peanut butter such as Jif or Skippy, or natural-style peanut butter.

What does each ingredient do in cookies? ›

Baking soda increases browning and spreading, resulting in a flatter cookie. Baking powder will give you a puffier cookie. Binding agents are the liquid in the recipe that hold the cookie together.

What are the peanut butter cookies from the Girl Scouts? ›
